Dmitry Chernyshenko: Tourism and Hospitality Industry national project helps mitigate the pandemic’s impact on the tourism industry in 2021
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko chaired a meeting of the Government Commission on Tourism Development.

Meeting participants included Head of the Federal Agency for Tourism (Rostourism) Zarina Doguzova, Deputy Minister for Economic Development Sergei Galkin, Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing and Utilities Yury Gordeyev, Tourism.RF Corporation General Director Sergey Sukhanov, and Chair of the State Duma Committee for the Development of Tourism Infrastructure Sangadzhi Tarbayev, as well as the heads of certain regions, and representatives of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, and various tourism associations.

Members of the Government Commission discussed the progress of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry national project, the regions’ involvement in the process, and also assessed the results of the Tourism.RF Corporation’s projects to develop the tourism infrastructure.

Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that large joint work was carried out this year to launch the Tourism and Hospitality Industry national project and thanked all the participating agencies and governors for their engagement.

“New state support measures in tourism, such as charters, grants, and cashback programmes have become part of the national project and have been actively used and applied everywhere across Russia this year. The tourism cashback programme alone has been used by 1.6 million Russians, with 6.7 billion roubles returned directly to their cards. Work began with the Tourism.RF Corporation on infrastructure development. Today the first 53 investment projects in 27 regions have been selected for implementation. Several agreements on the development of tourism infrastructure will be signed in February at the Russian Investment Forum, which will be held in the Sirius federal territory. Investment in tourism is among the most effective investments. For each rouble invested, we see 10 roubles of attracted extra-budgetary funds,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.

The deputy prime minister noted that 2021 was much more successful for domestic tourism than the previous year. The measures envisaged in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry national project helped hold down the impact of the pandemic and also developed tourism. The industry has promptly adapted to coronavirus-related restrictions, which is an important achievement. Most resort destinations are expected to surpass the indicators of 2019 by 15-20 percent by the end of the year, especially the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Crimea. There are also new destinations, which attract domestic tourists and that will fully recover and even grow: the Kaliningrad Region, the Kamchatka Territory, and the republics of Altai and Karelia among others.

“Today we reviewed the first year of the tourism national project. We still have a lot to do, but even now it is important to note that the coordinated work of the Government, Rostourism, Parliament and the industry and expert communities has made it possible to bring the development of the industry to a completely new level. Our goal for next year is to launch the national project at full capacity, so that every support measure is used by people and businesses. The New Year is coming up, and I want to wish everyone new and colourful emotions from travelling around our beautiful country, and we will continue to do our best for this,” Zarina Doguzova said.

Tourism.RF General Director Sergey Sukhanov also noted the high involvement of the regions and investors in the development of tourism infrastructure.

“The corporation has reached agreements on cooperation with 30 regions, and has signed agreements with 21 of them; the others are ready for signing in the near future. The construction of several facilities will begin in 2022, and we are also getting to the preparatory work, research and design on the rest,” Sergey Sukhanov said.
